It’s the start of a new school year when best friends Sarah and Kristen lay eyes on the new guy at school Rock. Knowing that no one like Rock would ever go for a girl like Sarah, she quickly loses interest in him when she knows that she has no chance. Not to mention the fact that Kristen makes it clear that she has already claimed him.
When Sarah is faced with the challenge of impersonating Kristen by being the one to write up the online emails between Kristen and Rock, with her talented writing skills, their friendship is tested and so is Kristen and Rocks relationship. Do they really have as much in common as Kristen had thought? Or do Sarah and Rock have more in common than anyone thought?
Throughout the troubles of the online emailing, Sarah quickly gains her feelings for Rock just as quickly as she had lost them. Why does she seem to always think that maybe Rock and her might have more in common than Kristen and Rock? Sarah faces a scare when she accidently lets slip a clear detail about herself in one of the emails, but she then has to persuasively cover it up. Could the detail give Rock the hint that it isn’t really Kristen behind the computer writing all the personal emails that he thinks she is?
Sarah’s talented writing skills are recognized by one of her teachers and is asked to think about entering a writing competition that is coming up. Eventually, Sarah decides to enter it and writes about a suitable topic that relates to what is happening in her life at the moment. The topic she writes about is loyalty.
When Sarah finds out that she won the competition and is asked to read out her story in front of the class, she is horrified. In her story she writes about how loyal she is to her best friend for knowing that she can’t grow feelings for Rock although she can’t help but think that he would be perfect for her more than Kristen.
Finally Rock figures out the whole situation where his thoughts and outlook on Kristen change completely. He feels as if he has been betrayed by both Kristen and Sarah. Later on Rock realizes that it wasn’t Sarah’s fault and that she was just trying to be a good friend.
In the end, all turns out well for Sarah and Kristen realizes that she ‘would be better off without him anyway’.
Personal Response:
Lara Chapman’s novel ‘Flawless’ is an inspiring story that also sends out a strong message. Personally, I think that this book demonstrates the great lengths that someone would go to to keep a strong friendship, and how loyal someone would be to hide their feelings for someone they know they shouldn’t like. I would recommend this book to people aged 10+.
